Stanley Cup Champions
1986 represents a significant start in the history of the Calgary Flames, as they acquired forward Lanny McDonald, defenseman Al MacInnis, and goaltender Mike Vernon. The Flames swept the Winnipeg Jets, upset the Edmonton Oilers, and knocked off the St. Louis Blues in seven games. This created a showdown between the Flames and the Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately for Calgary, Montreal rookie goalie Patrick Roy was a brick wall in net and ended any hope for a Stanley Cup for the Flames. The team would not be able to repeat their success in the playoffs until the 1988-89 NHL season.
The year prior to this season, rookie forward Joe Nieuwendyk had his best season as a Flame recording 51 goals and another 51 goals during the 1988-89 NHL season. With the new acquisition of Doug Gilmour and the emergence of a fan favourite Theoren Fleury, the Flames would go on to capture their second consecutive President Trophy win.
The Flames would go on to meet the Montreal Canadiens once more in the Stanley Cup Finals. They would go onto get the better of them as they defeated the Canadiens in six games to win their first and only Stanley Cup.
2004 Cup Run
Up to this the 2003-04 NHL season, the Flames had gone through a playoff drought and suffered in attendance, to the point where the team was losing money. A series of newly acquired players invigorated the Calgary fans and gave them a reason to support the team, none bigger than current captain and leading point scorer for the Flames, Jarome Iginla. Players such as Dion Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr, and Vezina Trophy winner Miikka Kiprusoff, helped lead the Flames back to the Stanley Cup finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Flames would come just short of their second Stanley Cup, as they were defeated by the Lightning.
