The French Connection

After joining the NHL in 1970, the Buffalo Sabres were awarded the first pick and selected French-Canadian Gilbert Perreault, the touted junior that would go first overall. He proved that he was a star, winning the Calder Trophy scoring 38 goals in his rookie season. The next season saw the Sabres draft Perreault’s former junior teammate and fellow French-Canadian, Rick Martin, The two excelled on a line together. With just one piece missing in the 3-man line, the Sabres traded for another French-Canadian by the name of Rene Robert. The three took stride as one of the most lethal scoring units in the league. It was a writer by the name of Lee Coppola that named the unit, “The French Connection”. Their numbers are now retired and hanging from the rafters together, under a banner with “The French Connection” written.

The Dominator

In 1992, Dominik Hasek was traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Buffalo Sabres. With the Sabres number one goalie Grant Fuhr, on the injured reserve, Hasek took the opportunity and ran with it. During his career with the Sabres, his 6 Vezina Trophy wins, 2 Hart Trophies, and along with many others, proved to the league that he was one of the most elite goaltenders at the time. His unorthodox style of goaltending was rare at the time and paved the way for many successful goaltenders. With 6 full seasons with the Sabres, the current number one starter Ryan Miller has proven to be the goalie for the job, in hopes to take the team back to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Present Day

Jason Pominville now serves as Captain in hopes to lead a Sabres team to success. The Buffalo Sabres have added a bit more grit signing Steve Ott from the Dallas Stars and offensive skill in Cody Hodgson. With the absence of Derek Roy, forwards Thomas Vanek, Nathan Gerbe, and Tyler Ennis are looked to fill the offensive void. Tyler Myers and Christian Ehrhoff will also be logging long minutes as the top defensemen for the Sabres.
