Bobby Orr & Phil Esposito
The Boston Bruins are one of the teams from the Original Six, and home to one of the greatest hockey players to have played the game. A young defenseman by the name of Bobby Orr was signed by the Bruins in 1966. As a rookie and a defenseman, he scored 13 goals and 28 assists, a remarkable achievement as one of the best rookie seasons ever had by a player at that time. The expectations and talks surrounding Orr were true and brought many more in attendance to the Boston Garden.
In a blockbuster trade that brought Phil Esposito, Fred Stanfield, and Ken Hodge to the Bruins, a more grittier and aggressive style of play came into effect. This led to the eventual nickname, the “Big Bad Bruins”. Esposito became the first NHL player to score 100 points in one season. With the scoring ability of Esposito and Orr at the back end, they led the Bruins to 2 Stanley Cups in 1970 and 1972.
Raymond Bourque
The departure of Esposito and Orr paved a way for a new superstar, Ray Bourque. Like Orr, Bourque as a rookie, became an elite defenseman and one of the best in the league. He is the longest serving captain in Bruins history and is one of main reasons why the Bruins made it to the playoffs 29 consecutive seasons.
Present Day
2011 saw a drought come to an end. The “Big Bad Bruins” saw a revival with the helps from players such as Milan Lucic, Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, Andrew Ference, and even goaltender Tim Thomas. Their aggressive style of play was just too much for teams to handle, as they battled and bruised their way to the Stanley Cup Finals defeating the Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games and hoisted the Stanley Cup once again, since the days of Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito.
